WHAT started as an Essendon family initiative over Christmas has grown into a support program for poverty-stricken children in Vietnam.

The Lifestart Foundation founded by piano teacher Karen Leonard began to gain momentum after her first trip to Vietnam several years ago.

"I don't know what the turning point was, but I got to the stage where I couldn't ignore the children's living conditions any longer," Ms Leonard said.

On Christmas Eve five years ago, family and friends were gathered at the teacher's house to celebrate.

They decided that from then on, instead of the traditional exchange of gifts, everyone would help a needy family in Vietnam.

"It's easy to slot back into your comfort zone, but I found myself at a point in my life when I could do something about it," she said.

At the time, Ms Leonard had been deeply affected by the plight of 13-year-old Thanh, who was supporting his family of six by selling postcards on the street.

"He became my foster son and I sent money over to help him begin his apprenticeship to become a chef and work in a restaurant," she said.

The Lifestart Foundation developed various programs to help children at different orphanages - all aid recipients are interviewed by Ms Leonard.

"The foundation is a registered non-profit Victorian charity and does not receive government funding," she said.

A fund-raising dance will be held on August 7, at 501 Receptions in Footscray. Details: 0402 132 432.
