In May 2018 Lifestart Foundation launched and awarded a new round of major Medical Scholarships at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

These scholarships are the most valuable on offer at the University.

The scholarships were awarded to impressive first year students who have demonstrated academic excellence and are from extremely disadvantaged backgrounds. By way of their chosen vocation they also meet our criteria of completing a degree in an area that will not only benefit themselves and their families in the future but more importantly the wider community.

Hoai, was a successful applicant of a LSF Medical Scholarship. Please read her Letter of Gratitude that she sent to us recently.

My warmest greetings to my sponsor, Karen and Lifestart Foundation staff!

My name is Bui Thi Ngoc Hoai, a freshman majoring in General Medicine at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

I was born into a disadvantaged family. In the past, my parents were rice farmers and all the family income was completely dependent on 2 rice fields which often lost all of the crops due to extreme weather conditions. Despite that, my parents still sent my sister and I to school with the hope that in the future, we would not have to work in the rice fields.

When my sister and then I began university, the family financial situation became worse and worse as there are too many expenses to pay for our education. That is why my parents decided to move to Saigon, in hope of making a better living. However, because they are both nearly 50 years old, their working capacity has started to decrease. My dad has stomach problems and my mum has been under treatment for heart disease and blood pressure problems for years.

At the moment, my family monthly income is unstable. My dad sells ice-cream on the street and my mum does casual work. With that unstable and limited amount of income, my parents have to save and sacrifice a lot to afford our study. I want to have good results during my university time to deserve their love and sacrifice, as well as to support my family in the future.

I was lucky to be recommended by Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy for the medical scholarships offered by Lifestart Foundation. I also got the chance to go to Hoi An for the interview. After the interview, I felt a sense of comfort and relief as I had the opportunity to share my own difficulties as well as those of my family with Lifestart Foundation. I was also hoping to be one of the scholarship recipients.

My wish came true when I was informed of the news that I was selected for the scholarship. I felt extremely happy. This happiness is not only for myself but also for my family, teachers and friends. The scholarship is very valuable to me and my family both financially and mentally. It helps my family with the current difficulties and helps me continue to go to school and accomplish my dreams and ambitions. The scholarship is also a great source of motivation for me to try harder in the coming years.

Next year, I will put in more effort not only with my study but also with voluntary activities. After graduation, if possible I am going to study further such as completing a master’s degree to broaden my knowledge and experiences in order to become a good doctor and dedicate myself to bring happiness for my patients and the whole community.

Xin chào cô Karen, và anh chị trong hội từ thiện Lifestart!

Em tên là Bùi Thị Ngọc Hoài, là sinh viên năm thứ nhất ngành y đa khoa của trường Đại Học Y Dược Huế.

Em sinh ra trong một gia đình có hoàn cảnh khó khăn, ngày trước ba mẹ em làm nông và kinh tế gia đình hoàn toàn phụ thuộc vào 2 sào ruộng thường hay bị mất mùa đói kém. Dù cuộc sống khó khăn nhưng ba mẹ em vẫn nuôi hai chị em em ăn học đến nơi đến chốn với hy vọng sau này con cái khỏi phải làm ruộng vất vả. Kinh tế gia đình em ngày càng khó khăn hơn khi chị em vào Đại học và tiếp theo là em vì có nhiều chi phí cần trang trải. Chính vì vậy ba mẹ em quyết định vào Sài Gòn lập nghiệp. Nhưng vì ba mẹ em cũng gần 50 tuổi nên khả năng lao động cũng giảm dần. Ba hay bị bệnh dạ dày, mẹ cũng đang điều trị bệnh tim và huyết áp đã nhiều năm. Hiện tại gia đình em có thu nhập hằng tháng bấp bênh. Ba đi bán kem, mẹ đi làm giúp việc cho người ta. Với mức thu nhập hằng tháng hạn chế và thất thường nên ba mẹ em phải chắt chiu và hy sinh nhiều thứ để lo cho chị em em ăn học. Em mong muốn những năm đại học này sẽ học thật tốt để không phụ tấm lòng và sự hy sinh của ba mẹ, để đỡ đần gia đình vơi đi vất vả.

Em may mắn được trường Đại học giới thiệu về chương trình học bổng dành cho sinh viên ngành Y Dược của tổ chức Lifestart và đã có dịp vào Hội An để tham gia vòng phỏng vấn. Sau khi kết thúc buổi phỏng vấn em cảm thấy thoải mái và nhẹ lòng bởi đã chia sẻ những khó khăn của bản thân, gia đình trong hiện tại với tổ chức Lifestart với hy vọng mình là người được chọn để trao học bổng.

Điều em hy vọng ấy đã trở thành sự thật khi được nghe tin mình được nhận suất học bổng này. Em cảm thấy hạnh phúc vô cùng. Niềm hạnh phúc này chẳng những riêng bản thân em mà còn lan toả đến gia đình, thầy cô, bè bạn. Suất học bổng này có giá trị rất lớn đối với bản thân em và gia đình chẳng những về vật chất mà còn là động lực về tinh thần. Nó giúp gia đình em vơi đi những khó khăn trong hiện tại, giúp em tiếp tục đến trường để thực hiện ước mơ và hoài bão của mình. Suất học bổng còn là nguồn động lực vô cùng to lớn giúp em nỗ lực nhiều hơn nữa trong những năm học tiếp theo.

Năm học sau em sẽ tiếp tục nỗ lực và cố gắng chẳng những trong học tập mà còn trong các hoạt động tình nguyện xã hội. Sau khi tốt nghiệp nếu có thể em sẽ tiếp tục học những chương trình sau đại học như cao học để trau dồi kiến thức và kinh nghiệm để có thể trở thành một bác sĩ tốt cống hiến hết sức mình đem lại niềm vui cho người bệnh cũng như cho cộng đồng, xã hội.

Em xin cảm ơn Lifestart đã cho em cơ hội quý báu này. Em sẽ luôn cố gắng hết sức để xứng đáng với niềm tin và sự kỳ vọng mà mọi người đã đặt ra. Em xin chân thành cảm ơn.
